• The Yunzhug ophiolite, located northeast of Xainxa county in central Tibet, is in the middle part of the Shiquanhe-Namo ophiolite belt which is the southern boundary of the Bangong-Nujiang suture zone (BNSZ). The BNSZ extends approximately 1200 km across central Tibetan Plateau and separates the Lhasa terrane to the south and the Qiangtang terrane to the north. The Yunzhug ophiolite is mainly composed of ophiolitic blocks and thick sequences of Jurassic flysch and associated volcanic rocks. The ophiolitic massifs are up to 200 km long in the middle sector of BNSZ referred to as the Northern Tibetan Neo-Tethyan ophiolites18,19,20,21 (Fig. 1).

• Peridotite is an ultramafic rock, roughly 10% denser than gabbro and makes up much of the upper mantle. The ophiolite package of sediment – basalt – gabbro – peridotite is a cross-section of the oceanic crust and mantle, and until the recent JOIDES Resolution cores, the only way to put your hand on mantle rock.

The first thing to look for is ophiolite, a remnant of oceanic crust formed roughly 100 million years ago that has been uplifted by tectonic changes and made part of the continental crust. In Europe, an ophiolite massif extends for over 3,000 kilometers from Turkey to Slovenia. But the rock type alone won’t cut it. “Look for specific types of ophiolite: harzburgite, dunite, and the one with the ore—chromite. I would look for places that have all three,” Donzé said.
