• Roche volcanique formée par la consolidation de débris de lave acide éjectés par une nuée ardente et agglutinés avant refroidissement, souvent associée à une matrice vitreuse, présentant généralement une texture ponceuse et une coloration allant du gris foncé au gris-bleu.

• Les couches de cendre correspondent chronologiquement à la super-éruption d'ignimbrite campanienne qui a eu lieu il y a 40 000 ans dans l'Italie contemporaine, et l'on estime qu'une éruption moins importante a eu lieu à peu près à la même époque dans les montagnes caucasiennes. Les chercheurs affirmaient que ces éruptions ont provoqué un «hiver volcanique» car les nuages de cendres ont obscurci les rayons du Soleil, probablement pendant des années. Cette transition climatique a dévasté les écosystèmes de la région, "et a probablement entraîné la mort massive des hominidés et des animaux de proie et l'altération sévère des zones fourragères".
