• Il faudra attendre en Europe la Renaissance pour redécouvrir les savoirs antiques. L’ancêtre du thermomètre, le thermoscope est construit en 1607 par Galilée. Cette invention permet de noter les variations de températures, mais avant la création des standards Farenheit et Celsius au XVIIIème siècle, celles-ci ne sont pas précises. Quelques années plus tard c’est au tour du baromètre de voir le jour grâce notamment à l’utilisation du mercure.

• Among his creations are a set of military compasses (sectors) that were simple enough for artillery crews and surveyors to use. Together with instrument maker Marc’Antonio Mazzoleni, he would produce 100 such compasses with an instruction manual for each. Galileo also offered training courses on how to use them that he himself would teach, for roughly twice the cost of one such instrument. He also created the thermoscope and thermometer — the latter of which used the thermal expansion of air to push water up in an attached tube.

• The thermoscope: One of Galileo Galilei's most noteworthy inventions made around 1593, was the thermoscope, an earlier version of the thermometer. The thermoscope was a device built from a small vase filled with water, attached to a thin vertically rising pipe, with a large empty glass ball at the top. Changes in temperature of the upper ball would exert positive or vacuum pressure on the water below, causing it to rise or lower in the thin column.

• Galileo's other achievements, remarkable as they were, do not match this one. Had he not seen, through his telescope, the mountains of the moon, the satellites of Jupiter or the myriad stars of the Milky Way, others would soon have done so. The same applies to his use of the pendulum to measure time or of his thermoscope to record temperature. Even his classic work in mechanics was, essentially, application of his method to make a science of that subject.
