The last zone is below the ocean’s intertidal zone, which means that it has never experienced exposure to the atmosphere.

Rocky intertidal zones are highly vulnerable to climate change effects, such as sea level rise, changing air and ocean temperatures, and ocean acidification. Additionally, pollution from events such as oil spills can harm these ecosystems. Being able to track how a mussel bed, sea star community, algae, and other intertidal organisms are shifting over time at a site-wide scale would be extremely helpful for better-informing future restoration and conservation efforts.
