The sector has achieved the top position for a third quarter in a row, with eight out of 68 funds (11.8%) delivering a top quartile performance as at 31 March 2024, followed by the IA Global Mixed Bond sector in second place with six out of 71 funds (8.5%). On the other side of the spectrum, the IA £ Corporate Bond and the IA £ Strategic Bond sectors managed to avoid the bottom with one fund achieving the returns target, while all funds in the IA UK Equity Income sector failed to meet this hurdle. The percentage of funds delivering top quartile returns overall fell marginally to 2.7% ...

Grains of forsterite (green), of pyrope (red), and of a multitude of rock types. The mix of grains was scooped up from an anthill in northwestern New Mexico. Presumably the builders of the mound, harvester ants, were not sluggards, but promptly rebuilt as to be expected from a biblical proverb.

An international research group led by Dr. Takayuki Ishii from HPSTAR and Okayama University, Institute for Planetary Materials, has precisely determined the temperature dependence of the high-pressure phase transition pressure of a mantle mineral of pyrope garnet to bridgmanite plus corundum (post-garnet transition) which may well explain the puzzling dynamics of subducting slabs and upwelling plumes observed seismically in the upper part of the lower mantle.

The presence of articulated tail vertebrae in the sample enabled researchers to rule out the possibility that the feathers belonged to a prehistoric bird. Modern birds and their closest Cretaceous ancestors feature a set of fused tail vertebrae called a pygostyle that enables tail feathers to move as a single unit.

Investigators randomized 53 patients 2:1 to a single intravenous dose of spesolimab or placebo. The primary endpoint was the GPP Physician Global Assessment pustulation subscore (0=no visible pustules, 4=severe pustulation) at the end of 1 week, and follow-up continued to week 12. An early response assessment was chosen because of the life-threatening potential of acute and severe flares of GPP, the authors noted.

When mountains are bare, this tiniest member of the grouse family blends into the scenery with mostly mottled brown-and-gray plumage. But when the snow comes, the whole ptarmigan turns the color of its tail, including the extra feathers on its legs for insulation and its feet for snowshoes – useful for a bird that only lives above treeline and prefers walking over flying.

Surprisingly, the researchers found that these worms, which are protostomes, share many gene families and gene arrangements with the deuterostomes, the group that includes the vertebrates. For example, they share genes that are involved in multicellularity and maintenance of the body's internal environment. They also share a common system for controlling head development; the same mechanism that controls vertebrate head patterning also controls the development of ribbon worm heads and horseshoe worm feeding tentacles. Other protostome groups, such as insects, have lost some of these genetic features.

Interestingly, there appears to be physiological importance of the co-existence of phages and bacterium. Some researchers suggest that this phenomenon may bring potential benefits for the bacterial host, by introducing resistance to other phages or by enhancing the capability of the bacteria to form biofilms, and therefore increase the survivability of microorganisms in their natural ecological niche. Furthermore, the occurrence of prophage sequences in bacterial genomes has also been linked to the potential pathogenicity of microorganisms, which seems particularly relevant to microorganisms living in the human body16,17,18.

In the Parnaíba river delta, between the states of Maranhão and Piauí, erosion has unearthed mangroves previously covered by sand. In Rio Grande do Norte, 60% of the 399 km shoreline has been affected by erosion. Ceará has 572 km of coastline, 30% of which has suffered erosion and 10% progradation.

To identify variations in total ceramide (Cer) and total sphingomyelin (SM) levels associated to dyslipidemia, vitamin D deficiency and obesity, HPTLC-primuline profiling was performed on SLs extracted from NW (n = 15), -vitDNW (n = 23) and -vitDO (n = 25) men and from NW (n = 8), -vitDNW (n = 23) and -vitDO (n = 35) women. After separation on HPTLC plates, SL bands were compared by a profiling approach based on HPTLC-densitometry and FDIC (fluorescence detection by intensity changes) emission after primuline staining (data shown in Fig. S1).

While those actions were triggered by the energy crisis, he was receptive to the emerging issue of climate change. Consisting only of an electron and a positron, positronium (Ps) offers unique exploration of a purely leptonic matter–antimatter system. Traditionally, experiments have relied on formation processes that produce clouds of Ps with a large velocity distribution, limiting the precision of spectroscopic studies due to the large Doppler broadening of the Ps transition lines. Now, after almost 10 years of effort, the AEgIS collaboration at CERN’s Antiproton Decelerator has experimentally demonstrated laser-cooling of Ps for the first time, opening new possibilities for antimatter research.
