• Two other world-class examples of this Precambrian-Cambrian boundary stratotype are in Siberia (Russia) and Meischum (China). But in 1992 the International Union of Geological Scientists chose to designate Fortune Head as the best example in the world of this significant global stratotype. The designation made it, technically, a Global Stratotype Section and Point, or GSSP. The 2.21-km2 Fortune Head Ecological Reserve was created to protect this important interval.

• The oldest designated stratotype in these parks pertains to the Jurassic Tinemaha Granodiorite of the Palisade Crest Intrusive Suite. The granodiorite was named by Bateman (1961) after Mount Tinemaha, near the eastern border of Kings Canyon National Park. Type locality exposures are designated in the cirques at the head of Tinemaha Creek, in the cliffs of Mount Bolton Brown (Figure 1; Bateman 1961). Other notable exposures occur in the summits of Split Mountain, Mount Tinemaha, Birch Mountain, and The Thumb.

• In the last two years, Hamlet Protein has developed scientific studies aimed at determining the maximum levels of soybean meal (SBM) antinutritional factors (ANFs) that should be in broiler starter diets, leading to interesting findings, published in "The Poultry Site" in various articles. The most relevant SBM ANFs in poultry farming are trypsin inhibitor activity (TIA), the indigestible oligosaccharides stachyose and raffinose and the antigen beta-conglycinin.

• We have previously described how the content of ANFs in SBM such as trypsin inhibitors, the indigestible oligosaccharides stachyose and raffinose and the antigen β-conglycinin negatively impact broiler performance (Blanch, 2020ab). Furthermore, the high degree of variability in nutrient composition of SBM makes accurate diet formulation a challenging task as table values do not necessarily represent the raw material used for a specific feed, which may also affect broiler performance (Brown, 2021).

• Recently, we have investigated the effect of increasing levels of the soy GOS, stachyose and raffinose, on the ceca microbial composition of broilers at 21 days of age as a potential indicator of “gut health” (Brown et al., 2022). Broilers were fed 1 of 5 experimental diets. A basal diet based on soy protein isolate (SPI) to be devoid of soy GOS, or the SPI diet with the addition of 0.9, 1.8, 2.7, or 3.6% total GOS as a mixture of stachyose and raffinose at a ratio of 4:1, similar to SBM. Inclusion rates used were to be consistent with typical GOS ranges observed in commercial broiler diets with variable SBM quality.
