Chiral molecules with carbon as their centerpiece have been widely explored, but in this study, the researchers used oxygen instead of carbon. No one had ever achieved this before, because oxygen atoms in naturally occurring chiral molecules, which are called oxoniums, tend to flip between their mirror-image forms; this makes them very reactive with their surroundings. This reactivity makes chiral oxonium molecules very difficult to synthesize and isolate in the laboratory.

In the proposed biosyntheses, the highly reactive oxonium ions result from a transannular ring closing reaction with loss of a halide ion. Burton and co-workers were able to characterize the oxonium by treatment of the precursor with a silver(I) salt. The thermodynamic driving force for the process is the formation of silver bromide, but the key to the ultimate characterization by NMR spectroscopy was the use of a large non-coordinating counterion, Al[OC(CF3)3]4–, known as Krossing’s anion.

In their research, reported in the journal Nature, the group studied oxonium ions to come up with a way to create a pentacyclic oxonium salt with a chiral center.
