• Lancaster University and University of Warwick in the UK have monolithically integrated indium arsenide antimonide (InAsSb) mid-infrared (MIR) photodetectors on silicon [Evangelia Delli et al, ACS Photonics, web publication 16 January 2019]. The devices used a ‘type-II’ structure with an aluminium gallium arsenide antimonide Al0.9Ga0.1As0.1Sb0.9 electron-blocking barrier sandwiched between n-type InAs/InAsSb superlattices (SLs) to give an ‘nBn’ band structure that presents a barrier to electrons and a well to holes.

• The team made their photocathode from an ultrathin film of the alkali antimonide Cs3Sb. Alkali antimonide materials have been used for decades in technologies including streak cameras and linear colliders. Researchers have also created photocathodes using alkali antimonides. But they found that surface disorder in films of the material can weaken the brightness of the resulting electron beam. The Cornell team shows that it can fix that performance problem by controlling the orientation of Cs3Sb’s atoms.

• Through their combination of SX-ARPES experiments and computer models, the researchers have now been able to show that indium antimonide has a particularly low electron density below its oxide layer. This would be advantageous for the formation of topological Majorana fermions in the planned nanowires.

• The indium gallium arsenide and gallium arsenide antimonide (InGaAs/GaAsSb) type-II super lattice (T2SL) detector features 1280 by 1024 pixels on a 12-micron array pitch that delivers 90 frames per second at full resolution.

• The University of Montpellier’s NanoMIR group, a world leader in antimonide based compound semiconductor materials, has ordered a fully automatic, multi-chamber Compact 21 DZ research MBE system. The equipment has been funded by the Investments for the Future program (PIA) managed by the French National Research Agency (ANR) (Project “HYBAT”, ANR-21-ESRE-0026).
